The most impressive feature of Freedman’s scholarship, however, is linking such developments with the international dimensions of feminism. No Turning Back is an ambitious book, covering the origins and manifestations of American feminism.

Estelle Freedman, an American historian who has written on gender history and the history of sexuality, was compelled to write this volume because of the lack of a comprehensive history of feminism. Feminist scholars will surely welcome two recent additions to the history of feminism : Estelle Freedman’s No Turning Back and Ruth Rosen’s The World Split Open. No Turning Back: The History of Feminism and the Future of Women. 1, 2003 American Studies in Review Estelle B. © Canadian Review of American Studies/Revue canadienne d’études américaines 33, no.
